Prominent human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has commended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for his adherence to the rule of law following the recent Supreme Court ruling on local government administration in the state.
In a statement made available to The Guardian, Adeyanju praised the governor’s decisive actions, including directing the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to organise fresh local government elections and appointing Heads of Local Government Administration to oversee the 23 local councils as an interim measure.
“Governor Fubara has demonstrated a rare commitment to constitutional order and democratic principles. His directive for outgoing local government chairmen to hand over power by Monday, March 3, 2025, further reinforces his dedication to upholding the Supreme Court’s decision, which outlawed caretaker arrangements. This is a bold and commendable step forward,” Adeyanju said.
Adeyanju urged Governor Fubara to remain steadfast in his leadership despite political distractions and opposition from certain quarters.
“Your Excellency, the people of Rivers State and Nigerians across the country are rooting for you. Your focus must remain on the welfare of the people, even amidst political turbulence orchestrated by detractors,” he stated.

He further encouraged Fubara to stand firm against forces seeking to derail his administration.
“The political landscape will continue to evolve, and challenges will arise, but we implore you to stand tall and resolute. The people of Nigeria believe in your ability to navigate the complexities of governance and decisively counter any attempts to undermine Rivers State’s progress,” he added.
Adeyanju also took aim at former Governor Nyesom Wike, accusing him of attempting to disrupt governance in the state.
“Since former Governor Nyesom Wike has chosen to make himself the black sheep of the Rivers family, he must be dealt with decisively. His self-serving machinations cannot be allowed to prevail over the collective interest of the people,” he declared.
He called on Governor Fubara to assert his authority and ensure that Rivers State remains free from Wike’s political influence.
“Wike must understand that Rivers State is not his personal fiefdom. He cannot and will not go against the will of the people. Governor Fubara, do not give him breathing space. His influence must be curtailed, and his opposition to progress must be met with the full weight of your authority as the leader chosen by the people,” Adeyanju asserted.
Looking ahead to 2027, Adeyanju expressed confidence in Fubara’s ability to strengthen his leadership and overcome any opposition.
“We, Nigerians, are confident that come 2027, you will emerge stronger, more determined, and fully equipped to crush any opposition, particularly from Nyesom Wike, in the interest of all Rivers people,” he said.
He urged the governor to remain unshaken and continue working tirelessly for the people of Rivers State.
“The nation watches, and history will judge you kindly for your courage and dedication. Your leadership is a beacon of hope, and we stand resolute in our support for you,” Adeyanju concluded.
