Residents of Sagamu-Remo on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest at the palace of the Akarigbo of Remo, Oba Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, over alleged cases of land grabbing and violent attacks on farmers and landowners in the area.
The protesters accused Kamoru Lamino, popularly known as Sir Kay Oluwo, of allegedly orchestrating attacks that have led to killings, physical assaults and the forceful displacement of residents from their ancestral lands and farmlands.
Men and women drawn from several affected communities marched to the palace to formally present their grievances to the traditional institution.
Palace chiefs received the protesters and assured them that their complaints would be forwarded to the Akarigbo for prompt attention.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional council, the Lisa of Ofin Remo, Chief Adeyemi Salami, acknowledged that land grabbing has become a serious challenge across Ogun State, describing the situation as a threat to livelihoods and social stability.
He said the protest was driven by the fact that farming and land ownership constitute the primary source of survival for the affected communities, making the alleged attacks particularly devastating.
Chief Salami disclosed that the palace had commenced steps to address the matter, including engagements that may involve the Ogun State House of Assembly and other relevant authorities.
He said petitions and supporting documents were being compiled for submission, stressing that a lasting resolution would require government intervention.
He confirmed that the allegations presented to the palace were directed specifically at Sir Kay Oluwo, assuring the protesters that the traditional council would not ignore their concerns and would follow up with appropriate authorities to ensure justice.
One of the protesters, Omotayo Adesanya, alleged that at least 12 villages were currently under threat from the activities of the suspected land grabber.
He claimed that residents of the affected villages had been attacked, beaten and driven off their farmlands, adding that each of the communities reportedly owns about 400 acres of land.
Adesanya further stated that the landowners possess a Supreme Court judgment affirming their ownership of the disputed lands.
He added that the alleged land grabbing had affected prominent individuals, including Mr. Abiodun Oriyomi, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Sagamu, noting that the matter had been reported to the NUT Secretariat.
Narrating his experience, Oladipupo Orunmoku, who claimed he survived a gunshot attack, said the incident occurred on October 23, 2025, at Laposho village.
According to him, he was confronted on his family land after refusing an offer of money allegedly made to purchase the property.
He claimed that following his refusal, about 60 armed men invaded the land and opened fire on him.
The protesters appealed to the Ogun State Government, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Commissioner of Police, the Attorney-General, and security agencies to urgently intervene, calling for protection of lives and property and an end to what they described as violent land grabbing in the area.
