Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said that as Nigeria celebrates its 62nd Independence anniversary, Nigerians need to reflect on the past, present and the future they desire to see and bequeath to the next generation.

Sanwo-Olu, who stated this, yesterday, at a service to mark the anniversary, said Nigerians must learn from the past and the experiences of other developed countries if they want to create a better future.

The governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Tayo Ayinde, said: “We must utilise the great strength we have in our diversity and the unique resilience that is second nature to us to achieve the Nigeria of our dream.

Sanwo-Olu said his government had not allowed the challenges and unexpected set-back to derail it from fulfilling electoral promises.

On his part, Commissioner for Home Affairs, Anofi Elegushi, said Nigerians must not only pray for better days, but must also thank God for what He is doing at present.

Also, Lagos State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rt. Rev. Stephen Adegbite, who preached on the theme, “The Peace of Jerusalem,” said Jerusalem is a place of peace created by God himself and He directed that people should go there to pray and worship Him.

MEANWHILE, Sanwo-Olu has said that the government is committed to implementing a network of walking and cycling routes in the overall plan to implement a transport system that will improve the lifestyle of the people and economic competitiveness of Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Commissioner for Transportation, Frederick Oladeinde, yesterday, at the first Car Free Day celebration in Lagos, said that cities with demography like Lagos were beginning to embrace non-motorised transportation because of its environmental and economic benefits.

The governor promised that the state government would be more concerned about promoting non-motorised means of transportation as according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality, accounting for six per cent of global mortality.
