SARS arrests PDP leaders, others in Kogi for alleged gun-running
Operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) have arrested Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders and others across the three senatorial districts of Kogi State for alleged gun-running.
According to sources, about 15 persons picked up from their houses in Mopa as early as 3am were moved to the SARS headquarters in Lokoja.
“At 3am today, men of SARS Lokoja, came to Mopa, broke doors of people’s homes and commenced indiscriminate arrests, beating pregnant women and damaging property.
“The operatives alleged that they came on the orders of the CP and council administrators, while the victims were accused of gun-running.
“Among those picked up are the PDP women leader, Marion Alege (74); PDP exco member, Abayomi Akeju; a PDP ward chairman, PDP LG secretary and others.”
The Commissioner of Police (CP) has, however, debunked the alleged arrests, saying that those behind it were spreading falsehood.
He disclosed that six people were arrested following petitions against them, and that four of them had been released.
“It is falsehood. These people are doing it for ulterior motive. One politician and former governor for three months alleged that people were arrested. Petitions were written and after investigations we invited six persons. Four were released. Two are still being investigated.
“These is election period and anything that happens, they will read ethnic, political or religious meaning to it. There is nothing like that. Police will carry out its routine duty, whether it is election or not. We are doing our work,” the CP said.
