The dream of farmers, widows, and vulnerable across Kaduna South Senatorial District for a productive farming season came to reality, as Senator Sunday Marshall Katung commenced the distribution of five trailer loads of fertilizer and 150 water pumping machines to constituents.
The intervention, which targets beneficiaries across the district, comprising 87 political wards, is expected to ease the burden of rising farming costs while creating opportunities for increased agricultural production and improved household incomes.
Flagging off the distribution exercise on behalf of Senator Katung in Zonkwa, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, Chairman of the Distribution Committee, Christopher Haruna, said the programme was designed to reach a broad spectrum of the population, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, persons with disabilities, widows, and other vulnerable groups.
According to him, “the initiative forms part of the senator’s continued efforts to support farmers and strengthen food security across the eight local government areas that make up Kaduna South Senatorial District.”
Haruna explained that 150 water pumping machines were earmarked for dry-season farming, with seven out the eight local government areas receiving fourteen machines each in the first phase of distribution.
He urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the items and avoid selling them, stressing that the intervention was intended to improve livelihoods, boost agricultural output, and support economic growth in rural communities.
The committee chairman also appealed to constituents who were not captured in the first batch of beneficiaries to remain patient, assuring them that additional phases of the programme would be implemented to accommodate more people across the district.
“Senator Katung is committed to ensuring that the benefits of this intervention reach as many constituents as possible. Those who did not benefit in this phase should remain hopeful as arrangements are underway for subsequent batches,” he said.
For many of the beneficiaries, the support could not have come at a better time.
Some who spoke in separate interviews described the intervention as a lifeline, especially amid increasing costs of agricultural inputs and economic challenges facing many households.
A widow, Justina Paul who benefited from the programme expressed gratitude to the senator, saying the fertilizer would enable her to cultivate a larger portion of her farmland and provide better support for her family.
Similarly, a beneficiary from Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, John Kanwai noted that “access to a water pumping machine would significantly enhance dry-season farming activities and reduce dependence on rainfall.”
The beneficiaries pledged to utilize the items for their intended purposes and prayed for more interventions that would uplift rural farmers and vulnerable members of society.
The distribution exercise is expected to impact hundreds of farming households across Kaduna South, providing much-needed support to boost food production and improve livelihoods in communities across the senatorial district.
