The Ondo State police command has arrested a middle-aged man simply identified as ‘At All At All’ for hacking to death a 75-year-old farmer, Mr. Olusegun Oyadele and a police officer deployed to arrest him on the farm.

The Guardian gathered that the suspect resided in Ondo City, the headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area of the state but worked as labourer at a farm settlement known as Onipetesi Camp.

According to sources, the victim, Oyadele, met his tragic death in the early hours of Saturday while trying to spread his cocoa seedlings under the sun and was attacked with a machete by the suspect.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that one Veronica Olawale hinted them and some police officers from Enu Owa Police Station, Ondo, swung into action.

Joseph recounted that four officers visited the scene of the incident earlier but were attacked by the suspect, who also hacked one of the officers to death in an attempt to arrest him. He added that four other persons in the community were attacked before the command deployed a contingent, led by the Police Commissioner, Mr. Gbenga Adeyanju, to arrest the suspect who had fled to the forest.

According to the police spokesperson, the command’s search team was belaboured for more than 18 hours, combing the nooks and crannies of the forest before they eventually arrested the assailant.

He, however, noted that the vigilance group in the area assisted the police until the search was fruitful at about 3:00a.m. yesterday.

“The suspect was arrested in the early hours of Sunday by the team of policemen from the command with the assistance of local vigilance group. He was arrested in the forest around Tekunle village in Bolorunduro Local Government area of the state,” he said.

Joseph revealed that the body of the victims had been deposited at the morgue while the other four casualties who sustained various degrees of injuries during the attack were receiving treatment as different hospitals.

While he assured that the suspect, “At-all At-all,” would be prosecuted accordingly after he must have finished receiving treatment from an undisclosed hospital, and through investigation into the assault.

Meanwhile an eyewitness, who pleaded for anonymity, explained that there was no rift between the suspect and the septuagenarian before the former pounced mercilessly on him with the cutlass.

According to him, the tragic incident occurred at about 6:30a.m. and was reported at the police station. The suspect threatened to kill more people after killing Oyadele, who hailed from Ile Ife in Osun State.

“The suspect caught the old man unawares and matcheted him severally before the old man gave up. The suspect threatened to kill other people on the farm before he ran away into the bush,” he said.
