Seven days into second term, Sanwo-Olu yet to make appointments

Seven days after Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, officially kicked off his second term in office, he has not made any political appointment.

By now, many expected that the governor should have announced his Chief of Staff, Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Chief Press Secretary. He has, however, not made any of the occupiers of the offices public as at press time.

Sanwo-Olu, who has administered the state in the last four years, worked with a retinue of political appointees. Many are surprised that the governor has not been able to make any appointment, unlike when he was sworn in for his first term in 2019.

It would be recalled that a day after Sanwo-Olu was sworn in on May 30, 2019, he appointed his SSG and a Deputy Chief Press Secretary. He followed it up the next day with the appointment of his Chief of Staff.

Surprisingly, after being in the saddle for four years, the governor seems to be having difficulties picking those to work with him during his second term.

Some wondered if those who worked with him during his first term did not perform satisfactorily that he is finding it difficult in re-appointing them or appointing new persons.

A source said that two things were delaying the appointments. The Guardian gathered that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was not happy with the party’s performance during the last election in the state and some party leaders blamed it on the limited opportunities for politicians in the cabinet of Sanwo-Olu. The party leaders are demanding that politicians should be considered for juicy offices to help service the party’s machinery at the grassroots adequately. Also, it was learnt that the governor has not got the right signal from the state’s political godfather, who is now President Bola Tinubu.
