The raging rape epidemic is spreading like a wild fire across the country as more girls, mostly minors, continue to fall victims. A 23-year-old man, Badmus Qaudri, was at the weekend arrested by men of the Ogun State police command for defiling a three-year-old girl (name withheld).

The suspect was arrested following a complaint by the mother of the victim, who reported the case at Owode Egbado police station. The mother explained that she noticed blood at the private part of her daughter when she returned from the market. On interrogating the daughter, she revealed that it was Quadri who took her into his room and had carnal knowledge of her.

Upon receiving the report, the divisional police officer of Owode Egbado division, Olabisi Elebutte, led some detectives to the area where the suspect, who is a neighbour to the parents of the victim, was arrested after the victim identified him. The victim was taken to the general hospital at Idiroko, where it was confirmed that she had been defiled.

Also in Plateau State, wife of the Management Committee chairman of Jos South Local Government Area, Mrs Patience Choji, has come to the aid of a 13-year-old girl, Walida Kabiru, who was raped at Rhahol Kana community.

The victim, who lives with her grandmother, Mrs Ladi Mohammed, was raped by a 37-year-old father of six, Abdul Abdul, on June 6. Sobbing while narrating how it happened, the victim said the suspect had bought a sachet of water from her and gave her N50, adding that she had no balance at the time. The suspect waited until the victim’s grandmother was away before forcefully having carnal knowledge of her.

Meanwhile, just when residents and relatives are still trying to get over the two murder/rape cases in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, a 21-year-old lady, Grace Oshiagwu, has been raped and killed in the same local government.

It was gathered that the latest incident happened at Idi-Ori, the same local government, with a source saying, “A girl was raped and murdered at CAC Oluwatedo Church, Idi-Iri, on Saturday. This thing is getting out of hand in Akinyele.” The Oyo State police command confirmed the incident.

Olugbenga Fadeyi, the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), explained that, “While efforts are intensified, we want to continue to solicit for credible information from members of the communities around the area and the general public to unravel the mystery behind these dastard killings.”

Similarly, another five-year-old girl (name withheld), who was raped by one Chidiebere Egbukonye, aged 35, is terribly sick and currently admitted at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, following the internal injuries she sustained.

The incident took place in March this year. A medical report revealed that the victim has complications in her womb, abdomen and genital, leading to internal bleeding and swollen stomach. Also, unpleasant odour oozes from her private part as a result of burst bladder.

Mother of the victim, Mrs Chika Osuagwu, revealed that her daughter would need over N2 million to successfully undergo series of recommended surgeries and treatments. She said a number of tests had been carried out on the daughter, and some scans are about to be conducted before the commencement of the surgeries.

Mrs Osuagwu called on the government and other public spirited individuals to come to their rescue with financial assistance to save her daughter’s life while also appreciating the state deputy governor, Prof. Placid Njoku and others for their support so far.
