Police inspector caught casting vote at APC congress

Ibrahim Shekarau

Against all odds that trailed last Saturday’s parallel congress of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano, former Kano State Governor, Mal. Ibrahim Shekarau, has reaffirmed support for factional Chairman of the party, Alh. Ahmadu Haruna Danzago.

Shekarau, representing Kano Central at the Senate, yesterday, flanked the factional Chairman for the first time at a public event, attracting crowd of party loyalists, after the Janguza controversial congress.

The event marked the end of empowerment programme sponsored by the senator for about 5,000 women trained and certified in kitting and Micro Trades Hygiene Knowledge and Application.

In his address at the event, Shekarau, recognized Danzago as APC Chairman in Kano and reaffirmed his readiness to challenge the dexterity Ganduje in the party structure.

Reacting to whether the parallel congress which produced Danzago as chairman would stand the test of time, Senator Shekarau said, the result of the process, which he led has already been submitted to the national headquarters of the party.

Shekarau however preferred to ward off response to question on what would be the next line of action, if the party decided to ignore the outcome of the parallel congress.

“We have conducted peaceful congress and the outcome of the congress has been submitted to the national headquarters of the party to decide the next line of action, whether it will be accepted or not,” he said.

The two term governor and minister had rejected the consensus affirmation of Prince Abdullahi Abbas led Chairman of the party backed by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, alleging lopsided arrangement, which he claimed was orchestrated to scheme out some power blocks.

Shekarau, along other members of the National Assembly from Kano, including Senator Barau Jibril, representing Kano North, Ibrahim Shaaba Sharada, House of Representatives from Kano municipal, Abdulkadir Jobe, Tofa/Dawakin-Tofa/Rimin-Gado and Barr. Haruna Dederi Karaya, had petitioned the APC headquarters to reject both ward and local government congresses of the party.

Although, Ganduje has declared the parallel congress backed by Shekarau illegal, the aggrieved members have dragged the Abdullahi Abbas led APC leadership to court, demanding cancellation of the congresses in Kano.

Meanwhile, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, Zone one, has directed discreet investigation into a police inspector caught casting vote at the Sani Abacha Indoor Sport Hall, venue of the APC congress.

A statement dated 18th October, 2021 referenced CZ:5600/ZN.1/ZPPRO/KN/VOL.1/96 signed by DSP Abubakar Zayyyanu Ambursa, Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, for the AIG, has referred the matter to the zonal X-Squad for investigation.

According to the statement, “the attention of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, zone one headquarters, Kano, has been drawn to a trending picture on social media of an inspector of police casting vote at the recently conducted Kano State Congress of the APC along with his principal, the state party Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas.

“The inspector of police has been identified as Bashir Mohammad of the Special Protection Unit, Base one Kano. The Inspector is attached to Government House, Kano from where he was deployed to work with the said Alh. Abdullahi Abbas as a security aide.

“In view of the seemly unprofessional conduct of the inspector, the AIG has referred the matter to the Zonal X-Squad for investigation. If the inspector is found to have committed disciplinary offence by this action, appropriate disciplinary measures will be taking against him”.
