Shell lists gains of renewable energy, launches global campaign
Shell backed the increasing investment in renewables amid dwindling revenues from hydrocarbons occasioned by the crash in global oil prices, saying: “Current access to energy is neither enough to satisfy our growing energy needs, nor is it sustainable.”
It added that, “the ways in which energy is being provided now contributes to climate change as well as costing the planet valuable resources.”
Speaking at a press conference to mark the launch of its new global energy campaign, #makethefuture, at the Samba School, Santa Marta Favela, in Rio de Janeiro, the External Relations Manager, Shell Brazil, Glauco Paiva said renewables are the future.
According to him: “We live in a world of seven billion people and it is estimated that global population will grow to nine billion by 2017, so we need more cleaner energy in a more accessible way.”
As a result, Pavia noted that renewable energy initiatives will direct future investments, adding that this is why Shell, which has operated in Brazil for over 103 years is investing heavily in ethanol fuel. “The world needs all kinds of energy, as global population will not only grow in numbers, but also in social and economic needs, so it will be risky not to invest in renewable energy,” he said.
The “makethefuture” campaign debuted seven entrepreneurs from Brazil, Britain, Pakistan, and China who developed innovative renewable energy solutions from unusual or ordinary things in their environments.
Shell’s Global Head, Integrated Brand Communications, Malena Cutuli noted that one of the biggest challenges facing the world either as inventors or investors, “is how to provide cleaner and better energy.”
According to her, “makethefuture is all about how you can transform lives by creating products that can meet immediate and future needs.” She added that Shell is working with entrepreneurs worldwide to “transform innovations to energy.”
She further said: “Our programmes are like springboards to create accelerated thinking on how to provide viable solutions to meet the energy demand of the world population.”
