Shiites across Nigeria, under the auspices of Ahlil Bayt Nigeria, have said they will support candidates that will protect their interests, irrespective of their political party.
Making the declaration at the yearly conference of Ahlil Bayt in Kano State, yesterday, the group said its members and supporters have been mobilised and educated on whom to vote for.
The National Coordinator, Garba Gwarmai, told newsmen that like any other Nigerians, they were going to exercise their franchise in the coming election.
“With deep commitment and strong sincerity, we have decided to come out and contribute to the development and progress of our beloved nation through democratic process. We see our collective and massive participation in elections as a civic as well as religious duty. Commitment to justice and service to humanity are the basic tenets and principles of the path of Ahlil Bayt and our participation is in line with these principles.
“After careful review and critical evaluation of all candidates at all levels, and considering the collective interest of Ahlil Bayt followers in particular and the interest of the nation at large, the leadership of this platform will endorse and announce the candidate that all our members should vote for.
“The announcement will be made as soon as possible before the elections. We have unanimously agreed to collectively vote for the endorsed candidates irrespective of their political affiliations or party coloration,” he declared.
Confirming the position, Kano coordinator of the Ahlil Bayt Nigeria, Adamu Audawa, stated that the Shiites would give bulk votes to candidates that promise to protect their lives and accept them as fellow Nigerians.
