Super Eagles goalkeepers’ trainer, Ike Shorunmu, has said he is on a mission to unearth young talented goalkeepers, who will be nurtured to play for the national team in future.

Shorunmu told The Guardian, at the weekend, that the only way to solve goalkeeping problems in the national team is the introduction of a process to discover talents with good goalkeeping qualities.

He said the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping department needs to be highly competitive to attract outstanding goalkeepers, adding that the country is blessed with talented youngsters, who only need mentoring to be ready to play for the national team.

“This talent discovery mission is spread across every part of the world, but my key focus is discovering more goalkeepers from the domestic scene.

“We don’t need to wait for goalkeepers to lose form in the national team before seeking replacements, which can take time. There should be a process in place to replace any goalkeeper immediately to avoid creating a vacuum in the team,” he said.

On the national team’s programme since the postponement of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Shorunmu said the team would be engaged in friendly matches as part of the rebuilding process.

He added, that, the forthcoming Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) election might affect programme.
