Sigma Club, University of Ibadan has inducted Sir Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu (Odole-Oodua of the source) into the Sigma roll of honour.
The club, which is the oldest surviving student organisation in sub-Saharan Africa honoured him due to his high consideration and his achievements in service to the nation and humanity.
The induction ceremony which also marked the 88th birthday of the Adebutu and the 2023 Sigma guest luncheon took place in Lagos.
At the event, Sigma Chief, Eniola Moses, commended the inductee for his achievements and contributions of services to the community and country at large.
He said Adebutu’s reputation has been built upon his extraordinary accomplishments, impeccable qualifications and his numerous acts of philanthropy which align perfectly with the values of Sigma club.
The Sigma Chief said that when it comes to philanthropy, the Sigma fraternity has consistently exemplified a spirit of giving and it is evident in its ongoing commitment to various charitable initiatives, including the annual Sigma charity programme.
He added that the event also witnessed the unveiling of the design for the upcoming Sigma House at the University of Ibadan, saying the house would provide a home for the students of the esteemed institution.
According to him, “This vision has always centered around the essential need to give tangible substance to our esteemed reputation.
“It reflects our profound desire as the Sigma family to eternally link our identity with the University of Ibadan and this is to be achieved through the construction of a Sigma house on the university’s ground, it’s is our prayer and hope that the project will be realised shortly.”
“This occasion serves as a powerful testament to the genuine embodiment of Sigma’s values and its collective determination in unity with our cherished friends and benefactors.”
Earlier at the event, the Chairman of the event, Prof. Gabriel Ogunmola, said over the years, the club has been inducted into the prestigious Sigma Club roll of Honour for the eminent national and global citizens, who have distinguished themselves in different fields of human endeavour.
“The person to be considered for this honour must be a man of verifiable accomplishments and a source of inspiration to the sigmites and who imbibe the Sigma ideals, which is why we have chosen Sir Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu for today’s honour.”
Ogunmola said that to continue to contribute more in a meaningful and more organised manner to contribute philanthropy in a sustainable way, Sigma Club has now established the Sigma Foundation.
He stated that the objective of the foundation includes the provision of modern facilities in the tertiary institution, the award of scholarships and the establishment of endowed chairs at the University of Ibadan.
Speaking on the unveiling design of the Sigma House, Ogunmola said the Sigmites and friends would make a commitment and a giant step through the Sigma Foundation to build a befitting Sigma House at the University of Ibadan.
“This serves to house our children and their children’s children at the University of Ibadan as an opportunity to demonstrate the true spirit of Sigma ideals and its group energy with our friends and benefactors.”
While speaking, Adebutu reflected on his gratitude to the almighty and appreciated the Sigmites and Sigma Club for the great honour.
He said: “It is my great honour to be inducted into the Sigma roll of honour today and I appreciate everyone who took time to be here for me.
“I understand this is the first time this type of induction ceremony will be held in Lagos, outside the traditional environment of the University of Ibadan in deference of me.”
He commended all the kings, chiefs and all prominent present for the ceremony.
Adebutu said he was humbled and honoured to accept the induction and would be committed to using his influence to mobilise support for the development of the university and Sigma Club.
