SING seeks end to political violence ahead of Bayelsa guber election

The Save Ijaw Nation Group (SING), has expressed concern over the rising levels of political violence in the lead-up to the November 11 Bayelsa State Governorship election.

SING says it believes, that the foundation of a healthy democracy rests on the principles of peaceful coexistence, open dialogue, and respect for diverse opinions. It therefore urged all political actors, supporters, and stakeholders to put an immediate end to any form of violence or intimidation.

Reacting to the recent political violence witnessed in Opu-Nembe community of the state, the group in a statement by its South South Director of Organisations, Emmanuel Gilead, said: “It is essential that the electoral process is characterised by fairness, transparency, and the free expression of the will of the people. Engaging in violence not only threatens these principles, but also erodes public trust in the democratic process. We call upon all political parties, participating in the forthcoming election, to prioritise issue-based campaigns, focusing on policies and plans that can contribute to the betterment of our state.

“We further implore law enforcement agencies to uphold their duty to protect citizens, maintain order, and ensure that no individual or group is allowed to disrupt the peace of Bayelsa State. Equally, we appeal to the media to maintain responsible and unbiased reporting, facilitating the dissemination of accurate information to the public, ahead of the election.

“SING remains committed to promoting civic education, fostering inclusivity, and advocating for a violence-free political environment. We encourage citizens to engage in constructive discussions, exercise their right to vote without fear, and contribute to a future where Bayelsa state flourishes under the guidance of elected leaders who prioritize the well-being of all.”

The group urged the people of the state, to work collectively to uphold the values of democracy, unity, and progress, as the state, approach this crucial governorship election.
