SoCATT seeks improved access to parliamentary information for PWDs
Society of Clerks-At-The-Table (SoCATT) in Africa has voiced its concern for parliaments across Africa to enhance access parliamentary information for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).
This recommendation emerged during the 7th professional development seminar of SoCATT in Jalingo, Taraba State, over the weekend.Led by Julius Kampamba of Zambia’s National Assembly, the group emphasised the importance of implementing mechanisms that foster equal participation for PWDs.
It urged parliaments to establish sustainable platforms and strategies to engage Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) promoting mutual collaboration and synergy in parliamentary initiatives.
Expressing their commitment, members of SoCATT highlighted the necessity for parliaments to facilitate capacity building and raise awareness among members and staff regarding public engagements.
This, they believe, will contribute to a more informed and engaged legislative body. The group encouraged its members to explore research opportunities on critical priorities such as public participation, trust and confidence in parliaments. They aim to lay the groundwork for effective capacity development interventions.
“SoCATT organisation commits to researching and presenting key topics during each professional development seminar, emphasising the importance of informed discussions,” stated the group.
They called on parliaments to invest in capacity building for Members of Parliament (MPs) and staff, focusing on evidence generation and utilisation, while also establishing robust research and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) departments.
Highlighting the importance of technological advancements, SoCATT urged parliaments to expedite the implementation of digital initiatives to enhance public engagement and participation in parliamentary proceedings.
