Sokoto begins crackdown on uninsured vehicles from February

The Sokoto State Police Command will begin strict enforcement of the Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance policy from 1 February 2025, in compliance with federal regulations, officials said on Friday.

The measure follows directives from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and aligns with the Insurance Act and the Motor Vehicle (Third-Party Insurance) Act, which require all vehicle owners to have at least third-party insurance coverage.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ahmad Rufai, a significant number of vehicles in the state lack proper insurance coverage, prompting the enforcement action.

“Reports from the Nigeria Insurance Association highlight the growing concern over uninsured vehicles, which pose challenges to road safety and accident victim compensation,” Rufai said.

To implement the policy, the Sokoto State Police Command has established an enforcement team, which includes security agencies and a mobile court.

The team will be responsible for verifying vehicle insurance status and taking necessary legal action against defaulters.

“Vehicle owners who fail to obtain the necessary insurance coverage by the 1 February deadline risk facing enforcement actions, including fines and legal proceedings,” Rufai added.

Authorities stressed that third-party insurance plays a critical role in compensating accident victims and covering injuries or damages sustained during travel.

“It strengthens the insurance industry, creates employment opportunities for Nigerian youths, and promotes a responsible driving culture,” the police spokesperson stated.

The police urged motorists to obtain valid third-party insurance before the deadline to avoid penalties.

The command also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring compliance with road safety laws.
