The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has renewed its commitment to facilitate international trade for products and prevent Nigeria from becoming a dumping ground for substandard products from other countries.

It has, therefore, asked industries and stakeholders to invest substantially in brand protection activities to safeguard their intellectual property and associated brands against counterfeits, copyright pirates and producers of substandard products.

Director General of the agency, Mallam Farouk A. Salim, who stated this at a one day sensitisation, organised in collaboration with Digle-Business Solution for auto parts dealers in Enugu, said the agency is not relenting in the fight against substandard and falsification of products.

He told traders that the global substandard and falsified products industry was estimated to be at $4.3 trillion in 2021, stressing that the overwhelming figure justifies the need for robust collaboration between SON and all sectors, especially importers and exporters of products, to fight this scourge.

“In this regard, I urge the industry to invest substantially in brand protection activities to safeguard their intellectual property and associated brands against counterfeiters, copyright pirates and producers of substandard products.

“The recent launch of an app on Product Authentication Mark (PAM) is one of numerous ways of my administration to protect your investment and boost consumer confidence. Rest assured that SON is determined to rid our marketplace of these substandard and falsified products,” he said.
