Speaker resigns, Ikunyi returns, as APC lawmakers, others are sworn in
State’s N470 Billion Budget Passed
The Rivers State House of Assembly has passed the 2017 Appropriation Bill of N470 billion into law as proposed by Governor Nyesom Wike.
The budget was passed shortly after the lawmakers approved the report of the Appropriation Committee.
Meanwhile, Speaker Adams Dabotorudima has resigned after supervising the budget passage and the swearing in of the 12 lawmakers including; six members of All Progressives Congress (APC) and six members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that were returned on December 10, re-run elections in the state except Victoria Nyeche, the only female lawmaker in the House who did not partake in the rerun election.
Nyeche had been declared winner of 2015 election in the Court of Appeal but was denied being sworn in due to allegation of impersonation against her.
However, the Federal High Court, where the allegation matter was filed ruled in her favour and urged the Speaker to swear her in last month.
The resignation of Dabotorudima paved way for the return of Ikunyi Awai-Ibani as Speaker.
It would be recalled that Ikunyi had served as the Speaker of the 8th Legislative Assembly, before he resigned following the annulment of his election by election petition tribunal and having foreseen that he would likely be sacked by the Appeal Court.
As he anticipated, Ikunyi was among the 20 lawmakers sacked by the Appeal Court in the State.
