Concern raised for the Federal Ministries of Interior and Police Affairs to heed a recent motion moved by a Labour Party (LP) House of Representatives member, Murphy Omoruyi, for the immediate sale of police barracks over its deplorable living conditions will no doubt improve standards, stakeholders insist.
In a motion of urgent public importance on the need to address the deplorable living conditions of officers of the Nigerian Police, Omoruyi (Egor/Ikpob-Okha, Edo State) tasked the two ministries to liaise with the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) to immediately assess the value of all federal barracks across the country and announce a public offering for same.
The lawmaker gave reasons for canvassing for the sale, recalling that in September 2020, the National Assembly passed the Police Reform Bill 2020, which was signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari on September 16, 2020, adding that one of its core issues was how to address the living conditions of police officers.
He lamented that the problem of adequate and dignified accommodation for police officers still persisted, outliving previous remedial measures by successive governments.
The LP lawmaker said he was deeply worried that policemen and their families live in squalor quarters in barracks across the country.
