Stakeholders urge judiciary to prevent anarchy

Following the disagreement over the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Coalition for Stable Democracy (CSD) wants the judiciary to rise to the occasion.

A statement by its National Coordinator, Victor Aderibigbe and Secretary, Abdullahi Sanni, warned that the 1983 crisis in Ondo would be a child’s play if the judiciary allows itself to be used to truncate the people’s will.

The statement reads: “Ondo is a peculiar state, the people have a record of rejecting what they don’t want without minding the cost.
There are records to that effect and the judiciary has a role to play in stopping this potential disaster that is waiting to happen.”

According to the CSD, resolving the logjam before the election is the only way that it can ensure that democracy is made to work in the country.

The group alleged that the tension in the state had been complicated by the allegation that the conflicts over the right candidate were a plot to distabilise the chances of the PDP in the election.

The CSD alleged that recent utterances credited to the camp of Jimoh Ibrahim of the Ali Modu-Sheriff’s faction might be aimed at enhancing the winning chances of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the statement: “Although Ondo is a peaceful state, the people should not be taken for granted. The judiciary should ensure that the ugly incident that rocked the state in 1983 during the Adekunle Ajasin-Akin Omoboriowo saga is not allowed to recur in the polls slated for November 26.”
