Strike: SGF Akume summons Labour to emergency meeting
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has summoned organised labour to an emergency meeting over the nationwide strike embarked upon on Monday.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) declared a nationwide strike over a proposed new minimum wage following the breakdown of discussions between representatives of the federal government, the organised private sector and labour.
With organised labour asking for a new minimum wage of N494,000 and the government proposing N60,000, both parties are far away from reaching an agreement.
With Nigeria’s economy also crumbling due to the exercise, SGF Akume has summoned a meeting with labour as confirmed by the President of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Comrade Festus Osifo.
Osifo disclosed that labour leaders made up of the NLC and TUC were on their way to the SGF office for the meeting.
“Yes, we are heading there now,” Osifo confirmed as reported by the Nation.
The Guardian reported that with the nationwide strike taking full effect on Monday, the Federal Government called for a meeting with organised labour scheduled for Tuesday.
