Lions Club International, District 404-A2, Nigeria, Abuja Metropolitan, has unveiled plans to deliver free cataract surgeries to restore vision to those who have lost their sights.

President of the club, Lion Salamatu Yahaya Bello, who disclosed this in Abuja during her investiture as the club’s 14th leader, said the body will partner with local healthcare providers to identify eligible candidates who were condemned to blindness.

Identifying vision as a precious gift and cataracts can rob individuals of their sight, Yahaya Bello urged members of the club to strive and ensure no one is denied the gift of sight due to financial constraints.

She said: “One of our primary initiatives will be to provide free cataract surgeries to those in need within our community. Vision is a precious gift and cataracts can rob individuals of their sight. We believe that by offering free cataract surgeries, we can restore vision to those who have lost them to be healthy and have more fulfilling lives.

“We will partner with local healthcare providers to identify eligible candidates as practiced in years past where projects like this have identified children from the school of the blind, Utako, who were condemned to blindness owing to cataracts until AMLC showed up and we have proven record to show that the likes of Thelma can see again.

“This to me means a lot and I urge us all to strive and ensure that no one is denied the gift of sight due to financial constraints. So, we now know N100,000 will save a
child.”

The President also stated her administration readiness to supply educational materials, including braille books, assistive technology, and other resources, to the

school of the blind across various communities in the country, adding that the goal of the club is to empower visually impaired students with the tools they need to excel academically and unlock their full potential.

“Education is a fundamental right and it should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical challenges. This will equally be extended to other schools by way of equipping libraries to improve students reading habits and promote educational excellence”, She added.

In her remarks, the immediate past President, Lion, Ladi Aliyu Okojie, who disclosed that the club has won the best club award in district 404A2 Nigeria, called on passionate individuals to join the train and make Nigeria a better society.
