Supreme Court verdict: Police teargas women protesters, brutalise coordinator

There was pandemonium in Lafia on Friday as the Police in Nasarawa forcefully dispersed aged women using tear gas at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) state secretariat.

The coordinator of the group, Mr. James Alu, was reportedly beaten which resulted in a serious eye injury.

The protesters said they were disappointed by the verdict of the Supreme Court that did not consider the alleged criminalities that took place at the two wards of Gayam and Chiroma.

An eyewitness, Mercy Ogah, who spoke to our reporter in Lafia said that the women were in their normal gathering point praying when some persons suspected to be thugs of the All Progressives Congress (APC) forcefully invaded the secretariat complex alongside Police officers and started firing tear gas on the crowd.

“We have the right to express our dissatisfaction where our rights are trampled upon. One of the old women was hit with a stone and our coordinator was beaten almost to death if not for God’s mercy,” Ogah said.

She lamented that it was this same kind of molestation and brutality suffered that compelled them to vote massively for David Ombugadu who they believe will end the evil they have suffered over the years.

The coordinator, James Alu is currently receiving treatment in one of the hospitals in Lafia, the state capital.

At the time of filing the report, tension is still high as irate youths in some areas are insisting that the protest against the judgement of the supreme court must continue until.
