Twenty-five persons have been feared killed at Jandeikyula village in Wukari Local Council of Taraba State following an invasion by suspected herdsmen.

An eyewitness said yesterday’s attack, which began around 7a.m., saw the assailants shooting sporadically.

The council chairman, Adi Grace, who confirmed the invasion, was silent on the casualty figure.

According to her, “many people were killed in the attack. As I am speaking with you, I don’t have the casualty figure until am back from the village.”

Former leader of Wukari Youths of Vision, Luka Agbo, said: “ It is true that Jandeikyula village was attacked. And from the report before us, over 30 people were killed.”

He, however, called on the Federal Government to “urgently call to order the leadership of the herdsmen in the country.”

Wondering why the attacks have remained unabated amid military presence in the volatile states, Agbo added: “Takum that has massive presence of security operatives and witnessed the establishment of a mobile police barracks recently is just a few kilometers from this place (Wukari).”

He urged the government to deploy more troops to this “place because we learnt that the herdsmen are planning to launch more attacks on villages around here.”

The eyewitness, who simply identified himself as Victor told The Guardian that the attackers, numbering over 200, took the villagers unaware by shooting indiscriminately and burning several houses.

The Special Adviser to Governor Darius Ishaku on Students Affairs and an indigene, Samson Tor-Musa, confirmed the death of 25 people.

Sad by the development, he expressed dismay at the manner some few individuals were allegedly working round the clock to frustrate the efforts of his boss, whom according to him “ is an advocate of peace.”

Also confirming the incident, the police public relations officer (PPRO), David Misal, stated: “The command was aware an attack took place today (yesterday) at Jandeikyula village in Wukari.”

On casualty figure, he noted that the information available to the command “as at now is still very sketchy.

So, I hope to get back to you as soon as the details of the attack get to my desk.” No further response was heard from him as at press time.

Bali, Donga, Takum, Ussa, Wukari, Lau and Kerim-Lamido council areas have witnessed attacks in recent times, leading to wanton killings and destruction of property.

In Nasarawa, one person has again been feared dead following an attack on Gidan Sule near Kadarko in Keana council area.

The attackers, suspected to be herders, invaded the village yesterday at about 11.15a.m. and shot sporadically, killing one and injuring another in the process.

An eyewitness, who craved anonymity, said: “The number of the security agents here are just inadequate and that is why these herdsmen are killing without control.”

The leadership of the Tiv association has, however, called on government to deploy more security men in the area.

According to investigation, in the last one week, 16 people have been killed by the rampaging nomads in several Tiv communities in the state.
