SOKOTO State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has berated local councils nationwide for neglecting the tree planting campaign. Tambuwal-5-OKSOKOTO State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has berated local councils nationwide for neglecting the tree planting campaign. Tambuwal, who spoke at Goronyo while launching the 2015 Tree Planting Campaign for the state, said that the exercise has been sustained over the years in all parts of the federation, especially in the northern states, which are prone to desertification.

He said that the primary objective of the exercise was to sensitise the public on the importance of planting trees as a way to curb degradation of the environment.

According to him, previous administrations in the state had made efforts to protect the environment through the tree planting campaign. He lamented the neglect of the local councils shelterbelt policy unveiled during the 2008 tree planting campaign launch at Gidan Madi.

The governor noted that this year’s exercise was extraordinary because it coincided with the 100 days of the new administration and called on local councils to embrace the initiative and launch the campaign in their respective areas.

Tambuwal stated that having economic trees on farms improves the yield of harvests and that agro forestry is now the more acceptable form of modern and sustainable farming.

The governor urged individuals and organisations to show interest in the cultivation of tree crops such as date palm and gum Arabic so as to alleviate poverty and unemployment.

He added that a large number of date palm seedlings have been provided for the Great Greenwell Project for planting by farmers in the state. He enjoined religious and traditional rulers to continue to give their maximum support to ensure the success of the exercise.
