Tanker drivers block Benin-Ore road over herdsmen’s killing of colleagues
There was confusion on the Benin-Ore road, yesterday, as tanker and other articulated vehicle drivers blocked the road, following alleged killing of two drivers by herdsmen the previous day.
The Guardian learnt that the incident happened near Ofosu, the boundary community between Edo and Ondo states.
The development was said to have caused heavy gridlock as motorists and commuters were stranded for several hours on the busy road.
It was learnt that hoodlums blocked the road during a robbery operation on Tuesday night when the victims were killed, just as they made away with an undisclosed amount of money stolen from their victims.
The angry drivers, who blocked the highway at a military checkpoint in Ofosu, rejected all entreaties by other motorists to vacate the road.
Following the incidence operatives at the military checkpoint abandoned their posts due to the chaotic atmosphere, while the angry drivers said they would not leave the road until Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, addressed them.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Kontongs Bello, said the scene of the alleged crime was under Ondo State division.
