THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University branch, has resumed its previously suspended indefinite strike over what it described as the Taraba State Government’s failure to implement an agreement reached on January 17, 2025.
The decision was announced in a statement signed by the union’s Chairman, Dr Joshua Garba Mbave, and made available to journalists yesterday in Jalingo.
According to the statement, the strike had earlier been suspended in good faith to give the state government adequate time to address issues agreed upon during negotiations. However, the union said the government failed to take “concrete and verifiable steps” toward fulfilling its commitments.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TSU) Branch, hereby informs the general public, students, parents, and all stakeholders that it has resumed its previously suspended total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action,” the statement read.
The union disclosed that its congress meeting held on February 18, 2026, reviewed the situation and resolved that the continued neglect of longstanding issues left it with no alternative but to reactivate the industrial action.
Among the grievances cited by ASUU are the absence of a functional pension scheme for the university, non-payment of outstanding salary arrears owed to its members, accumulated Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and the failure to implement the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement.
Dr Mbave noted that the unresolved issues have lingered for an extended period, adversely affecting staff welfare, morale, and the overall functioning of the institution. He stressed that resumption of the strike was a last resort, taken after sustained dialogue with the state government failed to produce the desired outcome.
