For promoting sustainable development goals through actions and projects, the Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Responsibility Awards (SERAS) has honoured The Guardian and 24 other firms.

According to the organisers, this year’s award, the 10th in the series and tagged, ‘Sustainable Development Goals and The Future of Africa: Organisations as The Game Changers,” recognised firms that had promoted corporate social responsibility (CSR) actions and engaged in sustainability practice in Nigeria and Africa.

Specifically, The Guardian was recognised for its contribution to CSR reporting, while the newspaper’s state house correspondent, Gbenga Salau, was singled out for honour in that respect.

The awards’ promoter, Ken Egbas, noted that while the future would be increasingly determined by the extent to which an organisation effectively, convincingly and intricately engages its various stakeholders, sustainability actions, however, could not be neglected.

He explained that gaining and retaining market and mind shares were no longer solely dependent on high quality of goods and services but also the various means of getting them to the end users.

He added: “The key determinants have become the processes that influenced production and if they indeed contribute to societal equity and justice as well as helping the world meet the sustainable development goals.

“The 2016 awards, therefore, base assessment, categorisation and subsequent announcement of winners on the 17 sustainable development goals.

“SERAS has given us the opportunity for the very first time, to pitch Nigeria’s best against the rest from Africa and to be able to measure that impact.

“We also started this as a movement. We had it from the start that in our strategy, we were going to launch into the African continent at some point, but we did not know when. The idea is that after we take it up from here and the benefits that we have created in the Nigerian space for example, we should export some of those solutions to other African countries and create a unified platform that provides and promotes CSR and sustainability across the continent.”

The president of the jury, Indira Kartallozi, pointed out that the awards rewarded firms that do not only fear change but also address social challenges through sustainable practices.Other awardees included Fidelity Bank, Shell Nigeria, Nigerian Breweries, Nestoil, Edumark and Lafarge.
