Tension has gripped residents of Awka, the Anambra State capital, following the killing of a popular mobile advertiser and media personality, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as Aiza, and another unidentified man by suspected cultists on Sunday.

The two victims were reportedly shot at separate locations within the city, with Nwosu’s bullet-riddled body found inside his Toyota Hilux vehicle, while the second victim, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head, was found along a street in Awka.

The circumstances surrounding the killings remained unclear as of Monday, as the police commenced investigations and launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

A source familiar with the incident said Nwosu was trailed from his residence by suspected assailants travelling in a tinted-glass vehicle before he was attacked and shot.

The source said the deceased had survived previous attempts on his life.

Nwosu, who was popular within the entertainment and events circles in Anambra, was also a disc jockey and master of ceremonies at high-profile events.

He occasionally presented programmes on local radio stations and was known for using his vehicle for mobile advertising and public address services.

He had previously been involved in a controversial accident while performing a public address function with his vehicle, an incident that reportedly left him seriously injured and nearly crippled.

Confirming the killings on Monday, the Anambra State Police Command condemned the attacks and said it had intensified efforts to arrest those responsible.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement, said the attacks occurred on Sunday, August 30, 2026, and resulted in the deaths of two persons.

“The Police condemns in the strongest terms the gunshot attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in Awka on Sunday, 30th August 2026, which resulted in the deaths of two persons.

“The Command has consequently intensified the ongoing manhunt for the perpetrators and is calling for the support and cooperation of members of the public to assist in bringing the suspects to justice,” Ikenga said.

According to the police spokesman, preliminary information indicated that three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla, with an unascertained registration number, allegedly shot the two victims at separate locations in Awka.

He said police operatives were mobilised to the affected areas immediately after receiving a distress call and commenced efforts to track the assailants.

Ikenga said the bodies of the victims were recovered along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, Awka, respectively.

He added that the victims were taken to a hospital, where medical personnel subsequently confirmed them dead.

“While one of the victims is yet to be identified, the second victim has been identified as Isaac Nwosu, also known as ‘Aiza’,” he said.

The police said operatives recovered ₦7,550, one Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the scenes of the attacks.

Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, had condemned the killings, describing them as unacceptable and a direct affront to the peace and security of the state.

According to him, the commissioner directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.

The command also said security operatives had intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and adjoining areas in a bid to prevent further attacks and apprehend those responsible.

The police urged community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners and other members of the public who witnessed the incidents or had credible information about the suspects, their movements or the vehicle used in the attacks to come forward.

Ikenga assured residents that information supplied to the police would be treated with utmost confidentiality, stressing that community cooperation was critical to effective policing.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information that could assist the command in apprehending the perpetrators and preventing further attacks in the state.
