There is a strong call on the need for collaboration through technology to combat and provide sustainable solutions to the challenges in the African education system. The education system in Africa is fraught with several problems that border on financing, access to quality learning, and academic process management.
Speaking at the recently concluded eLearning Africa Annual Conference in Rwanda, VigiLearn CEO Onyekachi Ginger-Eke said that collaboration through the deployment of technology can make the education deficit in Africa a thing of the past.
Ginger-Eke noted that access to quality education is critical for the growth and development of Africa. Adding that that the current African education system cannot meet up the ever-growing demand for quality education hence the need to harness technology.
“For Africa to meet the need for increased productivity, interactive/collaborative learning, and individualization of learning processes, there is a need to leverage innovation and technology,” she said.
Ginger-Eke noted that Edtech companies are playing a major role in the growth and development of education globally by creating access & collaboration in education through technology.
“The adoption of edtech products and services has been on the rise over the last 5 years with the highest percentage experienced during COVID-19 pandemic.”
She illustrated a survey of 115 educators from 9 countries by GLG to assess the current state of edtech adoption.
According to the results of the study, edtech solutions have played a huge role in driving positive academic outcomes as 98% said they used a learning management system (LMS) to document, track, and deliver educational courses. Sixty-three percent said they used a content management system (CMS) to create and organize the creation of educational content. Fifty-seven percent said they used a student information system (SIS) to manage student data.
According to Ginger-Eke, technology holds promise for the future of learning in Africa. Her company, VigiLearn has grown in leaps and bounds over the years, focusing on improving access to education by leveraging technology and striking strategic partnerships to impact students and transform the educational sector.
VigiLearn has raised over 10 million dollars and increased the intake capacity of partner institutions by 300% as well as with over 10,000+ active students learning on its e-learning platform.
