A Lagos-based barrister and human rights activist, Evans Ufeli has condemned in no uncertain terms the action by the Presidency and National Assembly over the switching of the budget. He said the manner in which the Presidency was going about this budget issue is improper and worrisome and does not speak well of the country’s democracy.
“If there was a mistake in the old budget, all they had to do was come out openly and acknowledge it and go through the proper legal channels. What the whole situation is looking like now is that the government is subverting due process and running a kangaroo government.”
Ufeli discloses that the reason for the former budget’s sudden disappearance might not be unconnected with the fact that it was condemned by a lot of people but insisted that the method they have employed is poor and doesn’t speak well of the country as the international community watches.
Reacting further he said, “APC touted change during the campaigns but they are not offering us change. They should go through the proper legal channels if they want to effect any changes in the budget. The National Assembly should be up and doing and wake up to their responsibilities.
