Three die, others injured in Lagos multiple road crashes

In a series of road accidents yesterday, three individuals lost their lives while several others suffered injuries in various parts of Lagos State. The first incident involved an oil tanker fully loaded with diesel that collided with multiple commercial vehicles in the Maryland area.

Nosa Okunbor, spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the accident and attributed it to brake failure and reckless driving.

A second accident occurred when a truck carrying a 40-foot container crashed into a Mack truck, causing severe injuries to both drivers. This incident was also blamed on brake failure and reckless driving.

Three casualties were reported in these accidents, and they were removed from the scene before LASEMA Response Teams (LRT) arrived. An unspecified number of people were critically injured and taken to various hospitals.

In the aftermath of the accidents, the LRT worked tirelessly to recover vehicles, restore normalcy, and prevent further incidents. The road and bridge were temporarily closed due to the severity of the crashes.

General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He emphasised the importance of road safety and urged all drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations.

A third accident involved a cement-laden truck colliding with the BRT corridor at Demurin Junction. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, called on truck drivers to respect speed limits and follow road signs to prevent future tragedies.
