No fewer than three people were killed and many residents injured after a gang of thugs attacked Sabo community of Ede, Ede North Local Council of Osun State.

The thugs allegedly invaded the community on Tuesday with guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons and opened fire at some traders.

The shooting caused panic in the community as some occupants of the community mobilised to repel the attack.

When The Guardian visited yesterday, a resident said two of the hoodlums were killed, while a resident died.

He said about five others were injured, while one of those killed was set ablaze.

The eyewitness said the leader of the thugs, simply identified as Rasheed Oko-Ilu, is the second-in-command of a notorious gang had been declared wanted by the Osun State Police Command for terrorising Ede town and killing residents.

The resident said: “For sometime now, Rasheed Oko-Ilu’s boys have been coming to Sabo to terrorise us and the Seriki had called him (Oko-Ilu) to report his boys. I heard that Oko-Ilu had called his second-in-command named Olopa and instructed him and other boys not to come to Sabo again.

“But he (Olopa) refused to listen. Three days ago, I gathered that Oko-Ilu went to Olopa in person to warn him again, but his second-in-command refused to listen. He (Olopa) sees himself as a boss, who should not take instructions from anybody again.

“Oko-Ilu left the place and met with Seriki. He told the Seriki that anytime they (Olopa and other boys) visit Sabo again, they should ensure that they arrest them and must not hand them over to the police.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, who confirmed the incident, said it was a rift between some Yoruba boys and Hausa. She said only one person died in the incident.

Opalola said normalcy has returned to the community and assured the people of the state of adequate security of life and property.
