Tinubu appoints Akeredolu as South-West campaign co-ordinator
Southern governors hail North on agitation for state police
Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum and Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has been appointed as the Zonal Co-ordinator of the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council in the South-West.
Akeredolu’s appointment was conveyed in a letter addressed to him and personally signed by the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and made available to journalists in Akure, yesterday.
Tinubu, in the letter, dated August 8, 2022, noted that Akeredolu deserved the appointment owing to his impressive political achievements and the exemplary leadership he had demonstrated as governor of his state and as a party member.
“By way of this letter, we are pleased to formally convey your appointment as the Zonal Campaign Co-ordinator (South-West) of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council.
“This appointment is fitting and appropriate given your impressive political achievement and the exemplary leadership you have demonstrated as governor of your state and as a party member.
“We are grateful that you have joined our campaign team. We know you will do your utmost in this new responsibility as we conduct an effective, message-driven campaign leading us to victory in the 2023 presidential election,” the letter read.
MEANWHILE, the Southern Governors’ Forum has received with great relief the news of the resolution of the 19 northern state governors and northern Traditional Rulers Council to call for the immediate establishment of state police to address the continued insecurity challenges in the country.
This was contained in a statement personally signed by Akeredolu and made available to journalists in Akure yesterday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Olabode Olatunde.
The statement reads: “Their decision to support the call for constitutional amendment to reflect the current realities could not have come at a better time than now when the confidence in the capacity of the Federal Government to secure the country appears shaky.
“All patriots must salute the courage of the 19 northern governors and the northern Traditional Rulers Council for their stance at this crucial moment in the country.”
“We, on our part at the Southern Governors Forum, will continue to insist on the creation of state police as the only logical and pragmatic solution to the pervasive problem of insecurity in the land.
“In addition to this, we shall not fail to renew the call for the adoption of policies geared towards real devolution of powers to the federating units. This is the surest path to peace and progress.”
