Tinubu launches initiative to tackle maternal mortality, advance women’s health

President Bola Tinubu has unveiled RenewHER, a Presidential Women’s Health Transformation Initiative aimed at safeguarding maternal health and improving the well-being of Nigerian women.

Speaking at the Launch Gala and Awards on Thursday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, described the programme as “an answer to one of the nation’s most critical prayers” and a cornerstone of a healthier Nigeria.

He stressed that women’s health is fundamental to Nigeria’s development and called the initiative “the national engine of collaboration among all stakeholders in our campaign for a healthier Nigeria.”

“There is no greater test of a nation’s character than the care it extends to its women. Maternal health is the heartbeat of every family, the compass of social stability, and the truest index of national welfare,” he said.

The RenewHER programme will establish a Presidential Focal Office on Women’s Health, working in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health, the State-Wide Approach Coordination Office (SWAp), the Ministry of Women Affairs, and the Governors’ Spouses Forum.

Its goal is to integrate women’s health priorities into every state, local government, and community nationwide.
A key feature of the initiative is the creation of an AI-powered National Women’s Health Digital Hub, which will deliver geo-targeted campaigns on maternal survival, adolescent health, and preventive care. It will also strengthen the healthcare workforce, connect women and families to trusted health information, and link healthcare to entrepreneurship and economic growth.

Tinubu emphasized that maternal mortality must be eradicated, stating that maternal mortality is a shame against which the country must all rally. He added that every girl-child deserves not just the promise of a better tomorrow but the certainty of a healthier one.

He noted that RenewHER will complement existing initiatives such as the MAMII programme and align with international development partners.

He pledged that his administration will serve as both an umbrella and a catalyst for interventions until tangible results are achieved.

Kwara State First Lady and Chairperson of the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum, Prof. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, pledged the forum’s support, describing RenewHER as a commitment to advancing women’s empowerment across all states.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Women’s Health, Dr. Adanna Steinacker, credited President Tinubu’s vision for making RenewHER a reality and called on stakeholders to unite behind the programme.
United Nations Women Country Representative for Nigeria, Ms. Beatrice Eyong, hailed RenewHER as a turning point and a bold initiative at the highest level of government, affirming the UN’s commitment to supporting the effort to expand access and ensure dignity for Nigerian women.

Dignitaries at the event included the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, governors’ wives, diplomats, and development partners.
