Dr. Temitope Oni, Maureen Odum, Dr. Deji Akinwande, Prof Enock Olugbenga Oladepo Dare and Lola Akinmade Åkerström are five Nigerians who live far away from home. Oni lives in Australia; Odum is in the United Kingdom; Akinwande is in America; Dare is in Germany and Akinmade Åkerström calls Sweden home. Aside their Nigerian heritage, they all have something else in common: Excelling in their chosen careers far away from their country of birth.

Oni operates from Gnowangerup, a small Australian agricultural town rich with Aboriginal heritage and natural beauty, where wheat fields stretch wide and the echoes of the malleefowl whisper stories of the land’s first custodians. Known for its close-knit community and proximity to the stunning Stirling Range National Park, Gnowangerup has long been a bastion of resilience and regional pride.

Dr. Oni is a seasoned general practitioner whose medical journey has spanned four countries and countless lives. Since joining Livingston Medical in January 2025, Dr. Oni has brought a depth of global experience to rural medicine delivering emergency care, family health services, and critical outreach to Aboriginal communities with compassion, skill, and cultural sensitivity.

In London, the United Kingdom, far away from Dr Oni, is Odum,an accomplished business intelligence and data science professional whose career spans over a decade of delivering strategic data solutions across defense, finance, engineering, and consulting sectors. With a strong foundation in economics, mathematics, and business administration, she brings a rare blend of technical expertise, regulatory acumen, and stakeholder-driven innovation to enterprise decision-making.

Odum is currently a Manager of Data Intelligence at the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), where she leads nationally recognised analytics efforts across 250,000+ strategic defense assets. Her work, ranging from predictive dashboards to forensic analytics, has revolutionised defense planning, compliance reporting, and international coordination through NATO-aligned systems. Among her standout achievements is the automation of reporting pipelines that saved £3.6 million annually and enabled real-time command center visibility with a 72-hour reduction in data lag.

Prior to her role at the MOD, Odum held senior intelligence positions at Deloitte Nigeria and PwC, where she was consistently ranked among the top 1% of analysts in Africa. At Deloitte, she spearheaded BI systems for engineering and consulting projects worth over ₦48 billion, driving procurement transparency, project efficiency, and SLA monitoring. At PwC, she built Nigeria’s first multi-platform NGO analytics framework and deployed cross-sector intelligence platforms that unlocked over ₦1.6 billion in value for clients across finance and the nonprofit sector.

Odum’s expertise spans the full data lifecycle ranging from ETL automation and predictive modeling to dashboard development and compliance assurance. She is highly proficient in tools such as Power BI, SQL, Python, R, Tableau, and SharePoint, and has extensive experience integrating GDPR, ISO 27001, and ITIL standards into BI infrastructures. Her leadership in BI governance has not only improved audit readiness but also strengthened cybersecurity and risk resilience across multiple domains.

Beyond technical delivery, Odum is an effective cross-functional leader and change agent. She has trained non-technical stakeholders in self-service analytics, enhanced organisational data literacy, and championed the adoption of evidence-based decision frameworks. Her work has consistently elevated institutional performance by embedding intelligence directly into operations.

Odum holds a Master of Science in Data Science from the University of South Wales, a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from the National Open University of Nigeria, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Benin. She is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society (UK), the Artificial Intelligence Management & Financial Institute (AIMFIN), and the Institute of Management Consultants (FIMC). She is also ITIL V4 certified.

And in America, there is Dr. Akinwande, an engineer and academic whose groundbreaking work in nanoelectronics and two-dimensional (2D) materials has positioned him as a global leader in his field. He holds the prestigious Cockrell Family Regents Chair in Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. His interdisciplinary expertise extends to courtesy appointments in Materials Science and Biomedical Engineering.

His formative years were grounded in a strong academic environment at the Federal Government College, Idoani. A natural curiosity for science and engineering emerged early and deepened when he returned to the United States in 1994. He began his higher education at Cuyahoga Community College before transferring to Case Western Reserve University, where he earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering and applied physics. His master’s research introduced novel techniques in near-field microwave imaging, foreshadowing a career marked by innovation.

Dr. Akinwande earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University under the mentorship of the esteemed Dr. H.-S. Philip Wong. His doctoral work explored the electronic properties of carbon-based nanomaterials, significantly advancing the field’s understanding of graphene and carbon nanotubes. This research culminated in the co-authorship of the textbook Carbon Nanotube and Graphene Device Physics, now widely regarded as a foundational text in the field.

In 2010, Dr. Akinwande joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin. His groundbreaking development of the world’s first silicene transistor was hailed by Discover magazine as one of the top scientific breakthroughs of 2015. He further garnered international recognition for his work on ultra-thin, transparent graphene-based electronic tattoos wearable devices capable of non-invasive, real-time health monitoring.

His pioneering contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2016.

Nigeria also has a major talent at the University of Regensburg as a distinguished Alexander von Humboldt Fellow—an honour reserved for scholars whose research pushes the boundaries of knowledge and offers transformative societal applications. He is Professor Enock Olugbenga Oladepo Dare.

With research and academic engagements spanning over 30 countries across all continents, Professor Dare has become a respected figure in the international scientific community. His work has been supported by some of the most prestigious fellowships in the world, including the UNESCO and MONBUSHO Fellowship (Japan), the Fulbright and USAMI Fellowship (Princeton University, USA), the Taiwanese National Science Foundation Fellowship, and a long-standing association with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was recently awarded the esteemed Alexander von Humboldt – Georg Forster Fellowship, one of the highest honors for internationally recognised researchers.

Widely acknowledged as a pioneer in African nanotechnology, Professor Dare played a foundational role in the Nigeria Nanotechnology Initiative of 2006, a movement that brought nanotechnology into national focus. His research portfolio is rich and diverse, with notable contributions in hybrid nanocomposites based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), nanoporous membrane technologies, transdermal drug delivery systems, bimetallic nanoparticles for sensing and catalysis, green nanotechnology, and nanobiotechnology.

One of his most recent and innovative research areas centers on nano-enabled materials for anti-counterfeiting and forensic fingerprinting, particularly in criminal detection. He has successfully translated surface nanochemistry techniques into viable technologies, including an internationally patented process that converts waste products into functional nanomaterials. This breakthrough has significant applications in petroleum fingerprinting, oil-water separation, and enhanced oil recovery.

Professor Dare is also the inventor of a point-of-use nanoporous water purification technology, which earned him national recognition as the second-place recipient at the National Universities Research and Development Fair (NURESDEF) 2012, competing among all Nigerian universities. His work has garnered numerous accolades, including the “Innovation and Invention” Award from NASENI and a special commendation from the Governing Council of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, for “breaking new grounds in Chemistry” in 2014.

An accomplished scholar, Professor Dare has authored or co-authored over 100 scientific publications and delivered more than 30 invited plenary and keynote lectures at international conferences. He has mentored eight Ph.D. graduates, many of whom have secured academic positions at prestigious institutions worldwide.

In addition to his research and teaching, Professor Dare has contributed significantly to academic leadership. He has served as the Acting Director of Academic Planning at the Federal University Lafia and as Head of the Department of Chemistry at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

Nigeria has also blessed Sweden with Akinmade Åkerström, a bestselling novelist, photographer and entrepreneur.

Stockholm-based Åkerström holds a Master’s degree in Information Systems, with a minor in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), from the University of Maryland. It was this academic grounding in geoscience and mapping that ignited her fascination with the intersection of location, identity, and narrative.

In 2006, she moved to Sweden, setting roots in Stockholm, a city that would become both her home and her muse. From there, she launched a global career that has spanned over 80 countries, bringing depth, dignity, and complexity to stories often overlooked or misunderstood. Her photography, celebrated for its vibrancy and emotional resonance, has been featured by National Geographic, The New York Times, BBC, CNN, The Guardian, Travel + Leisure, and Lonely Planet, among others. In 2018, she was named Travel Photographer of the Year by the Society of American Travel Writers, and in 2022, she was honored as a Hasselblad Heroine for her influence in visual storytelling.

She is a multi-award-winning author, acclaimed for her ability to weave fiction and non-fiction with equal force. Her debut novel, In Every Mirror She’s Black (2021), broke ground with its nuanced portrayal of Black women navigating life and power in a Nordic society. It earned international acclaim and was longlisted for several literary prizes.

Her non-fiction works include the bestselling lifestyle book Lagom: The Swedish Secret of Living Well, which explores the Swedish concept of balanced living and has been translated into 18 languages. Due North, her travel memoir, won the Lowell Thomas Gold Award for Best Travel Book, cementing her reputation as a masterful chronicler of place and perspective.

Beyond storytelling, Åkerström is a builder of platforms. She is the founder of Geotraveler Media, a Stockholm-based visual storytelling agency, and co-founder of NordicTB, a travel influencer collective that champions underrepresented voices in Nordic travel media.

Her accolades are numerous: she is a recipient of the MIPAD 100 (Most Influential People of African Descent) award in media and culture, and has been profiled by major global platforms for her work as a cultural innovator. Yet for all her recognition, Åkerström remains grounded in her belief that stories are among humanity’s most powerful tools for connection.
