The Youth Party has conducted primary elections across selected constituencies nationwide as part of its preparations for the 2027 general elections, signaling a major step in the party’s efforts to expand its political presence and strengthen internal democracy.
The exercise, held on May 29, attracted party officials, aspirants, members and observers, reflecting growing interest in the party’s activities as it positions itself for broader participation in the next electoral cycle.
Party leaders described the primaries as a critical democratic process designed to produce candidates who will fly the party’s flag in state and federal legislative elections.
Under the party’s One Member, One Vote (OMOV) system, eligible members participated directly in the selection of candidates, a process the party says promotes transparency, inclusiveness and grassroots participation.
Among the notable contests was the primary election for the Idanre State House of Assembly Constituency in Ondo State, where Mr Obafusi Obatayo Johnson sought the party’s ticket.
In Bayelsa State, attention focused on the Nembe State House of Assembly Constituency, where Mr Corlenius Oguara participated in the primary process.
Interest was also high in the South-East, particularly in the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency of Abia State, where Engr Ojisi Lebechi Ogbaja contested for the party’s nomination.
Party stakeholders similarly monitored developments in the Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency, regarded as a strategic area in the party’s expansion plans, while the Kaduna North Senatorial District primary drew significant attention ahead of the 2027 polls.
In Lagos State, members followed the contest involving Ms Dolapo Osunsina for the Eti-Osa Constituency II seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The primaries came shortly after the party concluded its screening exercise, during which aspirants underwent verification and eligibility assessments before being cleared to participate in the elections.
Party officials expressed satisfaction with the level of participation, describing turnout across various constituencies as encouraging and indicative of increasing engagement among members, particularly younger political actors seeking opportunities for representation and leadership.
Observers noted that the contests carried strategic significance for the party, especially in constituencies where it hoped to build stronger visibility and electoral support ahead of the general elections.
According to party members, the primaries represented more than a contest for tickets; they served as a platform for the exchange of ideas, grassroots mobilisation and democratic engagement.
The Youth Party has continued to project itself as a platform committed to citizen participation, accountability and issue-based politics.
Party supporters say the successful conduct of the primaries demonstrates its determination to deepen internal democracy while preparing for larger electoral contests.
With campaigns gradually coming into focus, attention is now shifting from candidate selection to voter engagement, grassroots mobilisation and broader electoral strategy.
Political analysts note that party primaries often provide an early indication of organisational capacity and electoral readiness.
For many aspirants, Friday’s exercise marked the culmination of weeks of consultations, mobilisation and engagement with party members.
As results continue to emerge from participating constituencies, expectations remain high regarding the candidates who will ultimately represent the Youth Party in the 2027 general elections.
For the party, the primaries mark the beginning of what supporters describe as a more competitive and ambitious political journey across Nigeria’s electoral landscape.
