Transcorp Group, parent company of Trans-Afam Power Limited, has announced plans to add additional 240MW to Nigeria’s power generation capacity this year 2023.

President of Transcorp Group, Mrs Owen Omogiafo, disclosed this, yesterday, while commissioning the newly rehabilitated GT20 in Afam, Oyigbo Council of Rivers State.

Omogiafo said that currently the Trans-Afam Power was generating 188MW, stressing that the major challenge facing the company was gas supply.

She said: “All over the world, transformation is powered by power. Our first investment in power was Ughelli power plant in 2013; When we acquired it, it was 160MW but as we speak we are generating over 600MW and we are contributing very strongly to Nigeria’s power sector.”

Also speaking, the Managing Director of Trans-Afam Power Limited, Mr. Vincent Ozoude, said the company has saved capital flight by building its own “clean room” for the repair and maintenance of gas turbines’ components.

“We have just commissioned the generator clean room to repair gas turbines. We use the facility to repair generator rotors that will help us minimise the timeline of getting generator rotors out of the country to repair and then bring them back to Nigeria.

“We have saved the cost, time, logistics, labour and capacity development by having this clean room here.

MEANWHILE, the Management of Benin Electricity Distribution Company PLC (BEDC), yesterday, frowned on attacks on its staff in line of duty by some customers in its franchise states of Edo, Delta Ondo and Ekiti.

This is contained in a statement signed by the company’s Acting Head, Corporate Affairs Department, Mrs Evelyn Gbiwen, and made available to newsmen in Benin City, Edo State.

Gbiwen said: “The attention of the management of BEDC has been drawn to the alarming rate of brutal assault on its staff in the line of duty by customers who deem themselves to be above the law.

“Recently, there was unprovoked, near fatal assault of a line worker in a team and the unlawful hostage holding of an engineer, who led the team against his will, at Evbuotubu in Benin

“As a result of the attack, the worker sustained serious fracture on both legs and severe psychological trauma.”

According to Gbiwen, the management of BEDC strongly condemns the actions of the customers and hereby sounds a note of warning against assaulting its staff carrying out their lawful duties.

“BEDC has declared zero tolerance on attacks on its staff and anyone, who perpetuates such act shall be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” she added.

She appealed to aggrieved customers to always make use of customer service and other legitimate channels to air their grievances instead of engaging in violence.

She noted that BEDC was fully committed to providing quality service to its esteemed customers at all times.
