Tribunal reserves ruling on contempt charges against INEC

The Kano State gubernatorial election petition tribunal yesterday stepped down ruling on contempt charges filed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP’s) candidate, Abba Kabiru Yusuf, against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Abba slammed the electoral body with forms 48 and 49, accusing it of violating an order of the tribunal, which granted the PDP access to inspect electoral materials in the commission’s custody.

The tribunal on May 7, 2019 granted PDP access to inspect the electoral materials, obtain them for the purpose of maintaining and defending their petition as it pertains to the list of documents attached in the schedule.

Counsel to PDP, Bashir Mohammad alleged that INEC deliberately slowed down the processes, despite drafted schedule within which the inspection of materials begins and completed.

Earlier, counsel to INEC, Adedayo Adedeji, insisted that INEC did not commit any contempt or denied PDP access to electoral materials, which the tribunal granted.
