Trump, world leaders react to election of Pope Leo XIV, first American pontiff

The election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, has drawn a wave of reactions from political leaders around the world, many of whom highlighted both the symbolic and political implications of his appointment as the first American pope.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump described the election as “a great honour” for the United States.

“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honour to realise that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great honour for our Country,” Trump said on his Truth Social account on Thursday.

He added, “I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
Other world leaders offered congratulations while pointing to the potential role of the Vatican in global issues.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed hopes that the new pope would bolster human rights and dialogue.

“May his pontificate contribute to strengthening dialogue and the defence of human rights in a world that needs hope and unity,” Sanchez wrote on X.

Polish President Andrzej Duda described the election as an opportunity to deepen ties between Poland and the Catholic Church.

“Please accept the assurance of the readiness of the Republic of Poland to further strengthen these unique bonds — in the name of shared values, responsibility for the common good and the strengthening of peace in the world,” Duda posted.

In Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated the new pontiff and voiced hope that the Vatican would continue to provide moral support amid the ongoing war. In South America, Colombian President Gustavo Petro said Pope Leo XIV should advocate for migrants facing harsh conditions, particularly in the United States.

German opposition leader Friedrich Merz said the pope would offer “hope and guidance to millions of believers.”
French President Emmanuel Macron noted that he hoped the pontificate would be “a bearer of peace and hope.”
Israeli President Isaac Herzog also reacted, stating, “We look forward to enhancing the relationship between Israel and the Holy See, and strengthening the friendship between Jews and Christians in the Holy Land and around the world. May your papacy be one of building bridges and understanding between all faiths and peoples.”

In the United States, Senator Marco Rubio noted the significance of the moment and said the country “looks forward” to working with the first American pope.
