Two feared dead as truck falls off Ojuelegba bridge

Not less than two persons were feared killed Tuesday night when a truck fell off Ojuelegba bridge in Lagos, crushing a Toyota Camry and three commercial buses.

Two other persons were injured, said general manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Adesina Tiamiyu.

“A flatbed truck laden with plywood and finished boards tilted on top of Ojuelegba bridge and fell on three commercial buses and a Toyota Corolla Camry,” Tiamiyu said.

“Unfortunately, two people died while two other people sustained injuries but what we are doing now is recovery.”

The LASEMA boss said the accident was most likely caused by overloading.

“That vehicle was definitely overloaded and that was what I think caused the accident, ” Tiamiyu said.

The accident was a repeat of a September 2, 2015 accident in which not less three persons were killed after an unlatched container fell off a truck on the same bridge, crushing an SUV in which was travelling.

Relatives of three members of the family that died in that accident are currently in court seeking a N10-billion compensation.

Lagos State, its attorney-general, the Nigerian government, attorney-general of the federation, Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority and the Lagos Public Works Corporation are respondents.

Other respondents include Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, Federal Ministry of Works, Federal Road Maintenance Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps.
