Two people die in Anambra fire explosion

Two people were burnt to death yesterday, in a fire explosion involving a diesel-laden tanker and a shuttle bus at Odumodu junction, Umunya in Oyi Local Council of Anambra State.

Two people were burnt to death yesterday, in a fire explosion involving a diesel-laden tanker and a shuttle bus at  Odumodu junction, Umunya in Oyi  Local Council of Anambra State.

 
The Guardian learnt that the incident occurred at about 8:25 a.m. along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, when the tanker collided with the shuttle bus, following a burst tyre, resulting in the fire explosion.
  
An eyewitness said the tanker spilt its contents through the drainage, which generated flames and consumed everything on its way.
 
The eyewitness said that the explosion left two passengers in the bus burnt beyond recognition.
 
“The diesel flowing out of the truck flowed through the gutter, generating flames and burning everything on its way,” he said.
 
The state Director of, Fire Service, Dr. Martin Agbili,  who confirmed the incident, said the fire was caused by a burst tyre.
   
Agbili said: “We received a distress call at about 0840hours (8:40 a.m.) on Tuesday, May 24,  that a tanker loaded with diesel had a burst tyre, which resulted in a collision with a shuttle bus and ignited the fire explosion at Odumodu Umunya.
  
“We immediately deployed our firemen to the  “Our men left the scene after three-hour battle with the fire,” adding that from eyewitness account, they could confirm that two people were burnt to death.
   
Also, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Adeoye Irelewuyi, confirmed the incident, saying five male adults were involved in the crash.
   
He said two of them died, while three were rescued unhurt.
 
While commiserating with the families of the deceased, Irelewuyi warned motorists to avoid speeding and ensure they keep to the recommended speed limit.
