Operatives of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State, have arrested a woman, Mrs. Iyabo Sowunmi, allegedly attempting to bring a substance suspected to be “colos,” a psychoactive drug, to an inmate on death row (IDR).

The suspect was arrested on August 28, 2026 at about 13:33 hours at the Center.
Spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Olayinka Odukoya, confirmed this to newsmen in a statement in Abeokuta yesterday.

Odukoya explained that the woman, during a routine visit had come to see one inmate, Dare Sowunmi, an inmate on a Death Row (IDR) when the officers discovered a sachet of Milo beverage containing the substance in her possession.

He said that the contraband was detected at the main gate during the course of routine screening procedures, demonstrating the high level of vigilance, professionalism, and diligence exhibited by the officers on duty.

“Mrs. Sowunmi was immediately arrested and, in line with established protocols, handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.” Odukoya said.

The Controller of Corrections, Ogun state Command, Abioye Adesina commended the officers for their vigilance, reiterating that the Nigerian Correctional Service maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and other criminal activities within its facilities.

Adesina emphasized that custodial centers are institutions of reformation and rehabilitation, not breeding grounds for crime.

He, however, warned members of the public to desist from acts that compromise the safety and integrity of correctional institutions. Offenders will face the full weight of the law.
