LASSA-FEVER

A middle-aged man (names withheld), who was reported to have contracted the dreaded Lassa fever disease was yesterday, confirmed dead at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

Confirming the incident, UBTH Chief Medical Director, Prof Michael Ibadin, said in a statement in Benin City, that there was no cause for alarm, as all professional standards were strictly adhered to, in handling the victim.

Ibadin assured that the team of health care personnel, who attended to the victim was adequately protected, while others have been quarantined.

According to reliable sources at the hospital, the victim was rushed to the hospital, after complaining of appendicitis and was attended to by medical personnel, but died shortly after undergoing an operation.

It was gathered that the victim, who was on a visit to the country, died a few weeks after he had attended his late mother’s funeral at Ekpoma, in Edo State.

“All persons who were involved in providing care for the victim, have been taken care of according to standards, as determined by international best practices,” the CMD said.

Ibadin explained that, “The victim, an adult male patient who was visiting from his base abroad, had a typical presentation of abdominal pain, but the history of fever was not volunteered initially.”

He added that, “The suspicion of Lassa fever was entertained when following surgery, he had uncontrolled bleeding and has since passed on.”
