The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has been thrown into morning, following the death of a senior surgeon, Dr. Okeoghene Ejigba.

Ejigba, who was a Senior Registrar in the Department of Surgery in the UBTH, was said to have collapsed in the call room after performing four surgical operations.

Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Joshua Uwaila, who confirmed the incident, said the hospital would conduct a medical investigation to ascertain the cause of his death.

Uwaila, who expressed shock over the sudden death of the surgeon, said the management, staff and students of the hospital share in the grief of the deceased family.

Also, the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), UBTH chapter, yesterday on its tweeter handle posted that Dr. Ejigba collapsed and died after performing four surgeries.

It said: “We lost Dr. Okeoghene Ejigba, a Senior Registrar in the Department of Surgery. He died while on call duty, after performing four surgeries back-to-back. He collapsed in the call room and every attempt at resuscitation proved abortive.”

Meanwhile, Edo State government has pledged to use Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) campaign to reduce deaths from maternal and neonatal problems.

State Health Education Officer in the Ministry of Health, Ehigie Efe Helen, disclosed this yesterday when she addressed journalists in Benin City.

She disclosed that the campaign, supported by UNICEF, is targeted at vaccinating women of childbearing age, who are between 15 and 49 years with Td vaccine.
