UCTH confirms suspected ebola scare, allays fears

EbolaTHE Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee and Deputy Chief Medical Director of University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Dr. Queenet Kalu yesterday confirmed that a patient suspected to be suffering from Ebola Virus Disease(EVD) died on Tuesday.
“Yes we had a patient that was suspected to have died of Haemorrhagic fever but it does not call for panic as everything is under control.
There is no need for the public to be scared of EVD as it is not confirmed.”

The scare had begun when some workers in the hospital who sought anonymity confided to The Guardian that some patients brought into the Emergency Department of the hospital yesterday had shown EVD symptoms .
The Guardian further gathered that all the nurses and doctors that handled the patients have been quarantined while the suspected Ebola patients have been isolated in a special room.

When The Guardian visited the UCTH yesterday at about 5.30pm, the Emergency Department H was locked and patients were not allowed in even though some medical personnel were seen through the window inside the locked Emergency department.

It was further suspected they may be among those quarantined as the emergency department is completely isolated from the public and there was tighter security than usual within the premises.

It will be recalled that in the wake of Ebola scare last year, UCTH had taken delivery of personal protective equipment and acquired necessary skills-requirements to check any outbreak .

At the training programme last year, Chief Medical Director, Dr Thomas Agan had said it was meant to acquaint laboratory technologists with knowledge of laboratory diagnosis, collection and transportation of specimen as well as prevention of Ebola transmission in the hospital and laboratory.
