UI launches solar training centre in industry-academic collaboration

The University of Ibadan has become the first host institution for a Solar Energy Training Centre established by itel Solar Energy, marking a new industry-academic collaboration aimed at preparing Nigerian students for careers in the renewable energy sector.

The centre was officially commissioned on Thursday, May 29, in a ceremony that drew university officials, students, and representatives of itel Solar Energy. The facility will serve as a dual-purpose space for technical training and student study, offering both theoretical and hands-on instruction in solar technology.

“This marks the beginning of a meaningful and enduring partnership,” said Professor Kayode Adebowale, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan. “The opportunities and benefits extended to our students—from hands-on training to scholarships and internship opportunities—are deeply commendable.”

The training programme, which is scheduled to run weekly, combines classroom learning with practical exercises in solar installation and energy systems. In addition to training, students will be eligible for merit-based scholarships and top-performing participants will receive job offers within itel Solar Energy’s operations, particularly in STEM and marketing departments.

As part of the partnership, itel Solar Energy renovated the Student Union Study Hall, outfitting it with ergonomic furniture and installing a 24/7 energy storage system to ensure uninterrupted power. The hall will also serve as the venue for training sessions and has been equipped with free device charging stations to support student learning.

Covenant Oladele, President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Government, said the initiative had created new pathways for student development. “With solar training, scholarship access, and a modernised learning environment, our academic and career prospects have just been significantly expanded. This shows what real corporate responsibility looks like,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the company, PR Manager Olaotan Fawehinmi said the centre reflects itel Solar Energy’s long-term commitment to youth development and the green economy. “We are shaping the next generation of solar energy professionals and creating direct career pathways in the renewable energy sector. Every opportunity we create is a step toward a cleaner, smarter, and more inclusive energy future for Nigeria,” Fawehinmi said.

The event concluded with a tour of the renovated facility and live demonstrations of solar technology. According to the company, there are already plans to expand the training centre model to other universities nationwide.
