UI’s Remi Aiyede Emerges 21st NAPSA President as Adesina, Lafenwa Secure Key Posts

A renowned political scientist and former Head of the Department of Political Science, University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Remi Aiyede, has emerged as the 21st President of the Nigerian Political Science Association (NAPSA).

Aiyede emerged through a consensus arrangement during the association’s conference and business meeting attended by political scientists from universities and research institutions across the country.

The electoral process was conducted by an electoral committee chaired by Professor Alade Fawole, former lecturer in the Department of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, and currently of the Department of Political Science, University of Ilesa, Osun State.

In line with the association’s tradition that the host institution occupies three principal offices, Professor Olubukola Stella Adesina and Dr Stephen Lafenwa also emerged by consensus as Treasurer and General Secretary respectively.

Other members of the new executive council include Professor Murtala Mohammed as Vice President, Professor Robert Dode as Assistant Secretary, Professor Yusuf Musa as Financial Secretary, and Professor Rahanat Lawal as Auditor.

Also elected were Professor Ike Alumona as Public Relations Officer (PRO), Professor Jaja Nwanegbo as Director of Research, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Nasiru as Legal Adviser, while the immediate past president, Professor Hassan Saliu, emerged Ex-Officio I and Dr Ejura Egwumi as Ex-Officio II.

Meanwhile, Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAU), Ayingba, Kogi State, which participated in the conference with a delegation of 25 members, secured the hosting rights for the association’s 2027 annual conference.

The university also pledged to sponsor the event, a development welcomed by members of the association.

The business meeting was attended by notable elders and distinguished members of the association, including Emeritus Professor Bayo Adekanye, Emeritus Professor John Ayoade, and Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, Professor Tunji Olaopa.

The new leadership is expected to steer the affairs of the association and deepen research, scholarship and policy engagement in political science across Nigeria.
