United Nations (UN) has launched the North East resource centre for women in politics, in Borno State.
The centre, located in Maiduguri, will promote political engagement, advancement and mentorship for aspiring women politicians in the region.
The Canadian government supported the establishment of women resource centres in Calabar, Cross River State, and Maiduguri.
Flagging off the centre, yesterday, at the Women Development Centre, Maiduguri, the Director General, Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development (MNCWD), Dr. Asabe Asabe, disclosed: “The women’s zonal resource centre should also serve as a hub that provides opportunities for female politicians to access information and knowledge-related products.”
She added that the knowledge products comprise electronic equipment, Internet facilities, counselling and contacts that could enhance their productivity for effective participation in politics and good governance.
Asabe lamented poor representation of women in Nigerian politics, which is on the downward slide since 2011.
“The engagement of women in active politics and governance is extremely low in Borno State, particularly at the grassroots,” she noted.
According to her, the women resource centre will also complement the President Bola Tinubu administration in its bid to advance women in politics and governance in the country.
As the women celebrated the new centre, she said: “We continue to appreciate the UN Women for the decision to partner MNCWD in engaging more women in politics and governance,” adding that the commitment of UN Women could advance the cause of Nigerian women.
In achieving this, she said all the required equipment for the centre was dedicated to the advancement of Nigerian women in politics in the six states of the region.
