The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Rabe Darma has stated explicitly that they will steer the housing industry to significantly contribute to the development of the economy of the country.

Darma made the assertion while inaugurating a 15man  Ministerial Committee on Implementation Framework for the Validated Stakeholders’ Resolution on Housing, Sector Reforms in Abuja.

 The minister added that they believe to transform the entire housing and built environments in Nigeria, saying that they also have the dream of making the industry the greatest ecosystem to the contributor of the economy in the country. And we are going to do it.”

According to the Minister, there’s a task of ensuring that the built environment is very much regulated so that it will contribute to the national Gross Domestic Product and the housing sector is already constant virtually every day in the news due to their dynamic actions.

Responding,Chairman of the committee and the Permanent Secretary, Shuaib Belgore explained that their task is aimed at improving the lot of Nigerians, standardising housing sector players, and also ensuring maximum benefit to our country in terms of improving the country’s GDP.

Belgore also said that since housing has been identified as a major contributor to GDP, which is underutilised in Nigeria, they have been travelling up and down, breaking ground, handing over estates, holding stakeholder consultations, meaning so many things have been doing.

“We will, as a committee, and when we have the implementation framework rolled out, we’ll hold further stakeholder consultations so that whatever we’re doing.We have already been provided with a working document, what to start with. We’ll look at it closely and work with it thoroughly.”

Also, the Executive Director of Federal Housing Authority, Oluremi Omowaiye, said they are glad to be part of this great vision that has come under the leadership the ministry, and it has become one of the leading ministries in the the country.

Contributing, Managing Director of Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Shehu Usman Osidi noted that the reforms also entail some legal, regulatory and administrative issues that they believe that working together will be taken to address those issues so that they can then move forward and achieve the objective.

According to Osidi, “We believe that the reform of the housing industry is long overdue and we consider this extremely necessary and the opportunity to be part of it is even more appreciated. Once we are able to achieve this, these reforms will see the light of the day and this industry will be the better for.”
